Warragul Community House

-

There were nine smiling faces on our zoom screen today – the regular volunteers from Warragul Community House enjoying a catch up. We chatted a lot, heard the news from each person and some training on using our new software. COVID-19 lockdown has meant we can’t have volunteers at the Community House each day, however we can work together, share ideas and prepare for reopening.

Kaye, Terri, Barb, Pat, Shirley, D-Jay, Kim, Lyn, Cherie, Cliff, Gabrielle, Michael and Denis all give their time, their energy and their skills on a regular basis. Some of them come in with skills to share, some come in to learn new skills and some come in to join our community just because they like us.

At Warragul Community House, we invite people to join our team, we offer training on computers and customer interactions and we offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Our volunteers are such a vital part of our daily operation. Kaye, Kim, Terri, Pat, Patricia, Shirley, Sherie and Barb answer our phones quickly, record enrolments, take payments and welcome visitors with smiles; Barb organises the ‘Golden Girls’ group to meet regularly. Lyn, Gabrielle and D-Jay assist with class support; Michael offers a regular class in car maintenance (both beginning and advanced); Cliff makes sure our technology continues to work; Dick keep our lawns neat, while Denis is helping plan for the new deck we want.

WCH knows how important it is to be part of a team and to feel connected to others in your community. We also know how important it is to get value from your volunteering, so before you start, we meet and talk about what skills you would like to learn and what you can offer. We make sure you are placed in a spot that will best suit you. We make sure that you work with an experienced volunteer to ‘learn the ropes’. We make sure that we train you in our procedures. We make sure that we talk to you about the expectations of an employer if you are looking to get work. And we offer you a reference if you are looking for work. We love people who have a willingness to learn, have some flexibility and are reliable and (this is really important) like to share some occasional chocolate! That’s the ‘pay’ you get…. not money, but heaps of recognition and learning. And chocolate, sometimes.

If you’d like to hear a cheery ‘good morning’ and a warm welcome to start your day, it’s time to ring Kate and ask if we have spot for you. Phone 5623 6032.
