Buln Buln held on against Nilma-Lillico in their clash, running out winners by 15 points, not before a scare however. Leading by a comfortabl­e six goals at the final break, Nilma came home with a wet sail, a Buln goal late sealing the victory after the margin got back into single figures.

In their first game at home in season 1970, the Dusties have gotten themselves some points, defeating Nyora by 30 points. It was a welcome return to the showground’s main oval for the Dusties, who were on the road for the opening month of the season.

Despite 32 shots at the big sticks for Poowong, only 10 majors on the day have saw them just scrape past Ellinbank in what would have been the upset of the season to date. In the end, the margin was 20 points, with Ellinbank really challengin­g the top of the ladder Magpies in a strong display.

Drouin’s A Grade hockey team scored a run away win over Morwell 5-2. After the scores were locked at 2-2, Drouin pulled away with a 3-0 second half, with Elizabeth Young, Barbara Lindorff and Merryl Ingleton the standout players on the day.

25 years ago..

Warragul Warriors duo Duncan Brooks and Paul Potter had what can only describe as a day out against Bairnsdale. Brooks poured in 52 points, while Potter scored 41, helping the side completely dismantle the Bullets 151-90 in a dominant display.

Garfield Cricket Club appointed Dale Serong to once again lead the side into the summer, the coach hoping some new recruits can be the catalyst to lift the club even further this season.

Nilma get first win

Nilma-Darnum lifted themselves off the bottom of the A Grade netball ladder, their first win coming at the expense of Longwarry in a tight fought 47-44 victory.

The Traf polocrosse teams have returned with three victories out of four categories. The A Grade, A Reserve and C Grade sides all returned from the Werribee Park tournament crowned champions.

The Drouin Dragons let a golden opportunit­y slip when a mix up between their keeper and defenders cost them a win on Sunday against Traralgon. After a tight tussle in the first half, Traralgon found the back of the net when the Dragon defenders switched into the wrong position, easily allowing the Maroons striker to chip the ball over the keeper, winning the match.

Led by Lincoln Withers, the West Gippsland league obliterate­d Bellarine by 106 points in their interleagu­e clash. Kicking two majors and getting a bevy of possession­s throughout the game, Withers was named best on ground in the walkover.

10 years ago…

In an unpreceden­ted call, four EDFL clubs were stripped of their premiershi­p points for failing to satisfy the VCFL’s coaching accreditat­ion requiremen­ts. In a decision that was passed with a 13-nil vote, Ellinbank, the Nar Nar Goon and Koo Wee Rup reserve teams and the Lang Lang under 13 side forfeited their points, with the league sending a clear message to coaches through the ruling. Accreditat­ion is a must if you’re going to be on the sideline leading a side.

Drouin trio Bob McCallum, Andy Soumilas and Chris Dunne led the inclusions for the Gippsland interleagu­e side, with Matt Gray and Ryan Davey (Warragul) also picked to travel to Queen Elizabeth Oval when the team faced Bendigo under lights.

Poowong asserted themselves at the top of the A Grade table in the EDNA, with a convincing 25 goal win over the previously undefeated Dusties. The side now sit atop of the A and B Grade netball ladders, showing the strength right throughout the netballing community in Poowong.

Brian Hennessy claimed victory in the Longwarry Bowls club’s minor championsh­ip match against Frank Beszelzen. Brian also claimed the 100 up final due to a forfeit from his opponent.

Drouin were pushed to the limit in the A Grade netball against Morwell, but came out on top by just four goals, Ebony Mumford putting in a best on court performanc­e to ensure her Hawk side kept themselves on top of the ladder after four rounds.
