Plan for Drouin
The draft Drouin Township Plan 2020-2036 outlines a set of recommendations and actions that aim to influence future development of the town centre and surrounding area.
Tract Consulting has prepared the draft plan that will be on public exhibition until June 8.
The primary focus of the plan is Drouin’s commercial town centre.
However, the plan also extends to residential and industrial areas as well as connection and development opportunities throughout the town and into new growth areas.
The draft plan has outlined a vision for Drouin based on community expectations for the future of Drouin.
“The township of Drouin will be a vibrant and walkable environment, steeped in charm and character. It will also be characterised by its green spaces, surrounding countryside and rolling hills.
“Quality community and civic services, and a high quality public realm will facilitate social interaction and community cohesion.
“Growth, development and employment choices will be an integral part of the future of Drouin. Supporting infrastructure will meet the demands of a rapidly developing town.
“The town centre will support a mix of land uses and densities. All new development will respect existing vegetation and landform. A peri-urban community, Drouin will maintain the things that are precious to the people who call this town home,” the vision states.
There are four central themes in the draft plan:
Activities and land use: Drouin should become a centre with strong retail and commercial focus, complete with a range of housing options.
Built form: New urban character that respects the past. Density and an increase in acceptable heights will be encouraged throughout the town centre. The historic fine grain of the town centre should be maintained.
Open space and public realm: Beautiful parks, plazas, tree-lined streets and bustling laneways.
Movement and transport: A well connected and multi-modal town with a compact town centre that supports all modes of transportation – train, bus, walking, cycling and car travel.
