Online call for annual appeal

A 34-year-old Yarragon man was arrested and charged with drug offences after being intercepted in his car last week.

Police intercepted the man on Steward St, Warragul on Tuesday.

Police searched the Mitsubishi Outlander and said they seized a quantity of drugs that appeared to be methylamphetamine (ice), cannabis and 1.4 butanediol (juice).

The man was bailed to appear at Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Police executed a search warrant at a Warragul property last Monday in response to investigations into recent drug activity.

The warrant was executed at a house in Dunn St. Police said they seized a quantity of methyl amphetamine (ice), 1.4 butanediol (juice) and cannabis.

A 32-year-old Warragul woman was arrested and charged with drug related offences. She was bailed to appear at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

This year, the Salvation Army’s Red Shield appeal will look a little different. Instead of volunteers standing outside supermarkets and other speciality shops it will be online.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Red Shield appeal will be conducted via the internet.

Captain Amanda Hart from the Warragul Salvation Army said that raising funds this year would prove to be tougher due to the circumstances.

“We haven’t been able to door knock or stand outside busy shops like supermarkets or Bunnings this year,” she said. “I think because of where we are and the economy, not as many can give this year too,” she added.

However, the Salvation Army in Warragul is still aiming to raise $30,000, which will help to combat homelessness, poverty, and social isolation, which captain Hart said was key at this time.

“I think there will be a lot of fallout from this, so raising money to help those is much needed,” she said.

This year, fundraising will occur at www.digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au/warragulsalvos, alongside many fundraising activities that people can sponsor.

“Some people are walking, like myself, I don’t like walking but I’m committing to 50km before June 14 to raise money,” said captain Hart.

The Salvation Army’s slogan this year is “Leave No One Behind” in which they are encouraging people to reach out to friends and family to check up on them during the coronavirus pandemic.

To donate, you can visit the website above, which will be open until June 14.
