50 years ago…

Sixty-three members attended Warragul Bowling Club’s annual meeting, where Harry Hawkins was re-elected as club president. Stuart Rogers was re-elected as the vice-president unopposed.

Neerim-Neerim South have snatched a narrow three-point victory over Buln in a thrilling EDFL clash. The Cats were behind in the final term, before a final quarter spurt saw them kick three goals, hitting the front with just five minutes remaining to take the worthy win.

Warragul United shocked the league, putting together one of their best matches of the season at the right time. They beat 1969 champions Newborough 6-2, with a big first half helping the side to victory, stunning the Newborough team.

Warragul Football Club turned its season around, after a disappoint­ing loss to cellardwel­lers Sale the week before. A 34-point victory over Moe showing that the side a glimmer of hope for the 1970 season. The side only allowed Moe to slot three goals, showing the defensive effort may have returned to the team after last week.

25 years ago…

Churchill handed the Warragul Warriors their first loss of the CBC season. Without Duncan Brooks, Justin Hotton and Milton Brooks was felt. Sandro Santo amassed 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Cam Hotton racked up 12 assists in the loss for the Warriors.

Miserable weather greeted netballers on Saturday, with slippery conditions making long accurate passes a rare sight. Buln Buln were able to settle quickly though and defeat Poowong by 31 goals to go one game clear on top of the A Grade ladder. Poowong defeated Ellinbank to leap frog them into fourth place and the Dusties doubled Longwarry’s score, 64-32.

Desi Barr had a day out for his under 14.5 Neerim South side, kicking eight goals in the wet conditions to power his team to an 80point victory against Drouin.

Warragul topped Leongatha by 11 points in a tight tussle that was clearly effected by the weather, without a score registered in the final quarter from either team showing how tough the conditions really were.

11 cyclists took on the windy conditions and the 39-kilometer circuit on Saturday. The Coca-Cola scratch race was won by Murray Fenwick who held off Geoff Thomson by four seconds in a time of one hour and nine minutes.

10 years ago…

Gippsland have kicked away victory against the Bendigo league in their clash under lights at Queen Elizabeth Oval. After being down by 27 points in the second quarter, Gippsland fought back brilliantl­y to lead by nine points in the final term, before fading late, falling by nine points.

The side kicked 3.7 in the final quarter, wasting a few opportunit­ies that would give Bendigo the opening they needed. Despite the loss, Bob McCallum was named best on ground claiming the VCFL medal, while Dwayne Holt booted five goals.

Mat Robertson booted six goals for Trafalgar in their crushing 89 point victory over Mirboo North, while Yarragon, Yinnar and Morwell East all recorded 60+ point victories.

Rob Knersch a body builder at Feelgood Fitness won the Novice Men Class at the Melbourne natural physique titles. Rob spent three months on a strict diet and heavy training program to get in a winning position.

Warragul teenager Luke O’Dea signed with Melbourne Victory’s senior soccer side in the A-League competitio­n. After playing juniors at Warragul, he quickly moved up the ranks and in 2008 he was awarded a scholarshi­p to the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Longwarry and Neerim South played out a thrilling draw in the EDNA, locked at 41-41 when the final siren sounded, while Cora Lynn prevailed over Warragul Industrial­s by just six goals.
