Book worms welcome return to libraries
Book lovers rejoiced as local libraries reopened, albeit in a reduced capacity, yesterday.
Under West Gippsland Regional Library Cooperation’s three step reopening plan, click and collect bookings were first to return.
In addition, book return shoots have reopened and Wi-Fi access is available outside.
There is still no public access to libraries for browsing, computer use or meetings.
Warragul Library programs officer Emma Fawcett said library card holders can access the click and collect service. Simply select books online and reserve a 10-minute slot to attend the library for collection.
In addition, the library will continue its home delivery service for vulnerable library users.
Started during the closure, Ms Fawcett said library staff had sent out a selection of books based on individual interests to those without online access, many of whom are aged over 70.
“People are thrilled to be finally renewing books,” she said.
The closure has also allowed many library users to see what modern libraries offer and take advantage of tutorials on how to navigate online services.
“It’s opened up a lot of people’s eyes to what we offer outside of books,” said Ms Fawcett.
The return date for books currently borrowed has been extended to July 1.
All returned books will be quarantined for three days.
Whilst many library users will be eagerly awaiting the return of computer access and newspaper browsing, the wait will be a little longer.
“As soon as it’s safe, we’ll be willing to restart that,” Ms Fawcett said.
For those relying on library computers to search for jobs, print forms or various other uses, Ms Fawcett said the closure had been tough.
“That’s been one of the hardest things for a lot of people,” she said.
However, Wi-Fi access is now available outside the library and can be utilised from the safety of parked cars.
