Superload delays

-

There will be significant delays and detours in place late tonight for a super load bound for Loy Yang power station.

The 640 tonne super load is travelling from the Port of Melbourne to Loy Yang along the Princes Hwy.

It left Port Melbourne last night and will be travelling between Dandenong South and the Yarragon weighbridge from 10pm tonight.

The load is being transported across three nights to minimise disruptions to road users.

The final stage will be from Yarragon to Loy Yang in Traralgon after 10pm tomorrow night.

It will be a very complex operation due to the size and weight of the super load so there are no designated viewing opportunities.

The transport vehicle is 640 tonnes and 100 metres long which means it must travel very slowly, at a top speed of only 25km/h.

At almost six metres wide it takes up the entire width of the road, so cannot be overtaken.

Traffic management officers and load escorts will be travelling with the super load for the entire journey. They will assist to manoeuvre the vehicle safely around corners, temporarily removing signage and lights, placing steel supports over existing drainage and then putting everything back in place once the super load has passed through.

The journey from Dandenong South to Loy Yang B along the Princes Highway will cause the most disruption on the night of Tuesday 2 June. The load will take up to nine hours travel this route and there will be limited opportunities for passing.
