Garfield

Glorious sunny weather all weekend saw good size fields out for the day’s comps.

Saturday was a game of single stableford which attracted a good size field of the 98 players. Damien Hammond playing off his handicap of 10 came out on top of A Grade with a fine round of 39 points which also included the two birdies being the fourth and ninth holes to defeat Matt Van Der Horst who also had a nice round of 38 points playing off his mark of eight.

His round also included the two birdies which came on the ninth and fourteenth holes. Clinton Smith also had the two birdies for his round. A total of the 17 birdies were scored by the field for the day.

Darren Rae won the B Grade event with a score of 38 points playing off his mark of 18 to defeat Greg Macklin whom scored 35 points. James Grant took out victory for the C Grade event with a round of 34 points to defeat Ian Scott who came in with a total of 31 points.

The ball run down went to all those that scored 31 points or better back to a count back. The course continues to have good winter playabilit­y all be it with preferred lies in place and golf carts being not allowed for use all last week.

The two grades were up for grabs on Thursday with a field of 45 players presenting. It was Paul Kaye doing the best with a winning A Grade score of 38 points playing off his handicap of 18 to defeat his regular playing partner in Kevan McMillan by 2 points.

Nick Gaal, enjoying a good run of form, won the B Grade event on a count back from Tom Fowler with a score of 31 points playing off his handicap of 36. Down the line balls were awarded to all those that scored 31 points back to a count back decision.

Next Saturday is the July Monthly Medal which is to be played in conjunctio­n with the first round of the 2020 Cox Cup.

A new playing schedule has now been released for all dates thru to October 2020 so if you haven’t been informed contact the club for all the details.

Men’s

Brilliant winter sunshine set the scene for the second and final round of the Stroud Trophy, the club’s premier fourball aggregate event. The top two pairings play off for the trophy in a match-play format. Sean “Bomber” Kelly and partner Damien “Saint” Bibby managed the heavy course conditions well to street the field with a total of 75 points to win the day event. Sean’s contributi­on of 39 points was also the best individual score of the day, whilst Damien’s 36 was equal fourth.

Runners up in the day event were Nick Gorman and John Piner with 66 points. DTL: Jamie Coates and Peter Daniel 66, Geoff Searle and Graham Rawson 65, Bryan Delaney and Mark Claver 65, Matt Guy and Robert Ballingall 65, Paul Timewell and Dave Axford 64. Median individual point score: 27.

Sean and Damien finished with a total of 139 points for their two rounds and will play Bryan Delaney and Mark Claver (137 points) in the final.

Last Wednesday’s Par event was also played under wet conditions, with surface moisture and soft patches seeing very little run on some fairways.

Drawing on his Viking heritage, Robert Fredericks­on mastered all elements in swashbuckl­ing style to record an excellent plus four, to have the best net score of the day and win Division 2. Shane Pallant parred the course off the stick to win Division 1 with plus one, including a hat-trick of birdies from the 15th to the 17th.
