Timber facts

-

I think most people reading letters to The Gazette regarding such controversial subjects as the sustainability or otherwise of harvesting timber in our local forests would love to have the ‘facts’ but often what we find instead are polemic viewpoints full of half truths and omissions designed to further a cause.

Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood (Gaz 30/6) purports to be stating fact.

I note by the way that Gary was ‘an industry representative’ before entering politics so in the interests of those like myself who would love to have the facts I ask Gary to clarify the following.

There is no mention in your letter of the recent Federal Court ruling which found that VicForests were/are logging illegally and unsustainably in every one of the coups challenged in the case.

In fact you praise VicForests ‘dedicated, competent and highly skilled forest supervisors’

In other words you are saying that the Federal Court is wrong, is that correct?

Secondly, you challenge David Clarke for saying that the greater part of timber harvested by VicForests goes to Australian Paper to be pulped.

Could you please let us know exactly what proportion of the harvested timber does go to Australian Paper and what proportion to local mills. Thirdly, you seem to be saying that the Leadbetters possum is not in danger of extinction. Is that correct?

Look forward to hearing from you Gary.

A B-Double load of bricks to some stores for zero customer care in the COVID crisis. There are shelves full of imported hand sanitiser in some shops, but not one single bottle for customer use on the counters.

Bricks to the house in Warragul where, despite COVID restrictions of only five people visiting, had eight cars that visited for an all night party and sleep over last Friday night. Police attended when the same thing happened about six weeks ago.

Bricks to the person who ripped up the grass on the roundabout at South Rd near the hospital. A white four wheel drive without a spare wheel on the back was seen in the area at the time. It has been reported to the police.

My question is, IQ 55, or anarchists, or just jealous. Or all three?

A big bouquet to the Baw Baw Shire for all the help given to me since COVID-19 started as a senior who lives alone. This is especially to do with organising food so I don’t have to go to the supermarket. Thank you so much for your friendly assistance and continued support.

A huge brick bat to Baw Baw Shire for the boring, ugly new name signs for our towns and districts.

What a waste of money. What was wrong with the signs that were already in place?

Whoever it was that designed them, or approved them, should be embarrassed and organise for the old ones to be returned.
