Snapshot of the past
A photograph of the Seaview to Brown’s Saddle road deviation was put in by the Country Roads Board in 1915.
The old road is seen going over the hills to the right with the new road, designed by Warragul Shire engineer S. J. Gray, contouring the spur to the left.
The original grade of the old road was one in three-and-a-half, later reduced by the shire to one in five. The grade on the new road is one in 20 with many more corners.
These changes to the steep hills came about during the move from horse-drawn vehicles to motorised transport.
With improvements to the power of cars and trucks today, we quite often see the reopening of the old roads. An example of that is Bona Vista Road from Warragul.

Thirty panel members have been recruited to represent community views on the future of car parking in Warragul’s central business district.
Panel members were selected through an independent recruitment process managed by Sortition Foundation.
Council originally planned to recruit 40 members, however a strong representative cross-selection of the local community had been achieved with the final numbers.
Establishment of the panel is part of a review of Warragul’s car parking.
The purpose of the study is not to determine if more car parks are needed, but the best solutions that are both practical and financially viable.
Mayor Danny Goss said the panel members represented a proportional cross-section of the community to ensure a wide range of different opinions and needs wer heard and considered.
“The panel now have the important job of reaching a community-led consensus on the best way to address parking in the Warragul cbd,” he said.
Cr Goss said the panel would play an important role in researching, discussing, deliberating and reaching a consensus on the community’s preferred solution to parking in the Warragul cbd.
The panel will help council determine how to make the most of current parking resources and plan for future parking needs.
Panel members will now participate in five indepth discussion sessions over July and August to deliberate options and ultimately form a position on the best solution moving forward.
The panel will provide a recommendation to council.
Each appointed panel member will receive a payment of $250 as a thank you for their time.
