Council meeting was on…until morning
REFRIDGERATION: VDA MEETS MANAGEMENT
The No 11 District Council this week will seek an assurance from district butter factories that farmers will not lose financially as they convert to refrigerated milk systems.
The committee elected by council will meet Longwarry and District Dairymen’s Association Ltd.
The meeting with the management of Petersville Milk Products Pty Ltd has been organised for Thursday, and the committee is seeking a meeting with Drouin Butter Factory Co.
District Council secretary Mr H. J. Roberts said that before they considered supporting a change to refrigerated milk, it wanted an assurance by the factory that farmers would not lose financially.
Mr Roberts said that if the committee received some assurance it would negotiate to have a system implemented to enable farmers to change over at the most economical price.
Some doubt was cast on the future of night meetings of Warragul Shire Council at its meeting last Tuesday and Wednesday…as the time sneaked well past midnight.
The meeting did not end until 1.06am. However, one of the favourable points of the meeting was the number of people in the public gallery.
Thirteen were in the gallery – pleasing many councillors who had been advocating greater public interest in Council affairs.
Although the later (or early) hour was criticised by some councillors, Cr Marion Richardson pointed out that the meeting was four hours shorter than the normal day meeting.
Cr A. G. Farrington said the meeting should have ended earlier.
Cr M. A. McCarthy supported Cr Farrington and said that if discussion had been cut, the meeting could have easily been completed by midnight.
Warragul schoolteacher Corrine Collins was named “Miss Victoria Charity Queen 1971” at a glittering “Miss Victoria” ball at the St Kilda Town Hall. On her first day in the role, Miss Collis was sitting her final examination for a Teaching Diploma at Geelong Teachers College. She is currently principal of Warragul North Primary School.
