There is always the prospect of fires over summer in Victoria, with loss of life and property an unfortunate possibility.
It is anticipated that the CFA will announce an early start to the Fire Danger Period again this year.
Kevin Brown from Gippsland Fire & Safety has witnessed the devastating losses caused by fires during these danger periods and acknowledges that much of this damage could have been avoided if we all took some simple precautions.
As we enter the Fire Danger Period, it is crucial that you carefully inspect your farm or residential property and clean up any potential fire fuel.
Lop any overhanging branches, clear gutters of all leaves and twigs, and remove fallen bark from the base of trees, especially near buildings.
The Fire Danger Period continues through to the middle of autumn and special precautions must be taken when working outdoors.
The CFA recommends carrying a fire extinguisher or knapsack on all farm vehicles during this period.
It is good practice to keep an eye on recently slashed areas for signs of smouldering grass, as many fires have started from sparks when slashers have hit rocks or wire.
All tractors and machinery likely to come into contact with grass, stubble, weeds or other vegetation should be fitted with a 9-litre storedpressure water extinguisher or a knapsack.
The use of grinders, welders and chainsaws is permitted during the Fire Danger Period, but it is essential to set up shields to block sparks, among other precautions.
Always have a reticulated water supply, a fire extinguisher or a knapsack water-spray (holding at least 9 litres of water) at hand.

All hoses and pressure gauges on extinguishers should be checked and water in knapsacks should be pumped out and replaced.
