DARNUM

Tuesday,

The Darnum Tennis Club, now numbers some 25 members, who take a lively interest in the game. The official opening was a great success. The most important factor, the weather was perfect, and a large number of people, including several players from the Warragul Shady Creek clubs, assembled.

After the President of the club, Mr Stainsby, had declared the court open for play, Mrs Stainsby played the first service. The programme for the afternoon’s play proceeded smoothly and with a swing that appeared to please all. Most of the afternoon was occupied with a mixed doubles tournament, which, in the final set was won Mrs Matthewson (Warragul) and Mr N. McDonald (Shady Creek) from Miss Nedwell and Mr Sargeant, with the score 6-5. The ladies provided a tasty and plentiful afternoon tea which was daintily served on small tables under the shade of some neighbouring trees, and all spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

The Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales arrived in England early last week and was enthusiastically welcomed by thousands of people. Mr A. Fisher provided the only relief in the ceremonial, but warm welcome. Stepping to the centre of the semicircle of Royalties and other distinguished personages, he shouted, “It is my privilege as the Australian High Commissioner to call for three cheers for the Prince on his homecoming.” The King gaily and unconventionally joined in. The Prince looked thoroughly refreshed after the restful weeks on the “Renown” Smilingly, he said to Mr Fisher: “I would like another trip to Australia soon. I had the jolliest time of my life.”

SEAVIEW

Two more properties have changed hands this week. Mr G. Brown having followed the example set by his brother (Mr J.A. Brown) some weeks ago and a returned soldier having bought the property formerly owned by Mr McGrath. This makes about 10 properties along or in the vicinity of the main South road which have changed hands within the last 18 months, and it is encouraging to see the work the newcomers are getting in. One sees a general improvement throughout the district. Several of the newcomers are returned soldiers and these settlers are very welcome here. Some of them have already shown that they can work their land quite as well as they could fight the Germans, and in this way, they are serving their country and doing their bit in another sphere.

Quite a gloom was cast over the district at the weekend by the death of Mr W. McPharland, JP. His long residence here, his public life as a councillor and a J.P., and above all is inherent kindness of heart had endeared him to all, especially the poor, many of whom have good cause to remember him and his many kindly acts.

Warragul Bowling Club

The opening ceremony of the Warragul Bowling Club whish was to have been celebrated on Saturday last, had to be postponed owing to the rain. This was unfortunate as all such social functions necessitate a good deal of preparation and trouble, and their unavoidable postponement causes disappointment to all. The club will now be informally opened, so that members can enjoy their favourite game.

Football ‘fashions’

The interest in football of some form one students at Warragul Technical School has been harnessed bring out their creative ability.

Form 1B students were asked to each design a football jumper; were taught to sew, and were then asked to manufacture a prototype.

Class teacher Mr Ken Senior said the project ended with the painting by students of football scenes.

“Several students also produced a sculpture about football,” he said.

Mr Senior said the project was likely to be completed this week.

The project involved several teachers at the school, including Mrs June Fletcher; she taught the form – all boys – how to sew.

Mr Senior said the project, organised by the WTS art department, was designed to test each student’s creative ability in as many fields as possible.
