Local volunteers on hand to help

For more than 25 years The Crossing Drop In Centre has played a unique and essential role for Drouin and its surrounds when it comes to supporting those who need it most.

The support service has had to postpone its weekly hot lunches during the pandemic, but has continued to provide takeaway meals for those in need which president Belinda Forrest said has grown over the past months.

The centre is run by volunteers in conjunction with the local churches in the region and has seen a rise in need throughout the past six months.

“Anyone can come in, no matter what your demographic is. So many more people are struggling because of lack of work and increased pressures, it’s been causing a lot of pain for people,” Ms Forrest said.

Before the pandemic began, on Wednesdays and Thursdays the centre offered a two-course meal for $5. Since the lockdown began, they have still offered the meal as a takeaway service which Ms Forrest said has been very successful in helping many during this tough time.

The Crossing Drop In Centre also has a large pantry and freezer full of food for those who may need some extra help, with volunteers packing boxes each week for families.

Ms Forrest said being able to help those who need it most is a big driver for many of the volunteers.

“We all feel very privileged to be here and help, we get a lot of help and donations as well and we are very well looked after to help others,” Ms Forrest said.

The centre is open four days a week from 10am-4pm, as well as Saturday from 9:30am12:30pm and can be reached on 5625 2655.
