New team for Jindi

-

The Jindivick Cricket Club are looking for players 50 years and over to join their new side for the over 50s season which begins on November 22.

Veteran’s Cricket Victoria have tried to get an over 50s side off the ground in recent times but haven’t been able to before reaching out to Jindivick Cricket Club treasurer Kevin Larkman.

“I was asked to get a team going so we can join with the Traralgon and South Gippsland teams. The main idea is to get retirees and those who used to play back playing to enjoy the game, if they enjoy the game still, they should really reach out to come back and play,” he said.

Mr Larkman began playing the game when he was 41. Now, 16 years later, he still plays on Saturday’s at his beloved club and hopes others his age are reinvigorated to return to the field in a different capacity.

“It’s all about mateship, friendship and enjoying the game. They can come and enjoy playing at one of the most picturesque grounds in Australia as well as enjoy a barbecue when it’s COVID safe and become friends with others playing the game,” he said.

The new side is set to take on teams including Traralgon West, Mornington Peninsula, Endeavour Hills, South Gippsland and Garfield/Tynong.

So far, the side has just enough to fill a team, but Mr Larkman is hoping to see around 20 sign on to play, with players often rotating through games due to injury or other commitments.

COVID-19 has seen the season reduced to just five games and a grand final, with games on November 22, December 6, January 10, February 14 and February 28.
