Changes in EDFL

-

The EDFL has confirmed there will be an age change in junior football for next season.

Next season will see under 18.5 and under 16.5 competitions replace the current under 16 and under 18 style, however, it will be for one season only after a majority vote approved the change and AFL Gippsland confirmed it last week.

The move will allow some players who missed out on their final year of junior football to play again, while also assisting in retention rates and allowing a stronger likelihood of clubs fielding teams at both junior levels.

EDFL operations manager Ken Moore said the move was one that was important across a few areas for the league.

“The main reason was to allow those players to play again, but also to help with retention rates. There’s a large drop off in 16s and 18s, so an extra six months may keep a few in the game,” he said.

The change comes after Trafalgar officially joined the EDFL last month, seeing the league hosting 11 teams in 2021.

AFL Victoria have also released an updated return to training protocol, with many clubs eyeing the start of their preseason campaigns in the coming weeks.

Junior training, both contact and non-contact can resume for those 18 and under, providing it is conducted outdoors, with no more than the minimum number required to conduct the session.

Spectators must abide by the gathering rules, while the use of indoor facilities such as change rooms and toilets are still not permitted.

Seniors are permitted to return to training, but it must be non-contact and social distancing must be maintained throughout, with club rooms and sitting areas to remain closed.
