Businesses upbeat for Christmas trade
Following a year of challenges, Warragul businesses are upbeat about the Christmas trade period and rebuilding the strength of the central business district next year, according to Warragul Business Group president Teresa Mitchell.
Ms Mitchell has been elected to lead the business group for a third term as president.
WBG recently held its annual general meeting via Zoom. Other executive members include vice president David Cann, secretary Susie Warenycia, treasurer Tarisa Hancock and Sue Jones, Jacquey Turner and Andrew Schreyer.
Ms Mitchell said it had been a difficult year for local businesses – “they are very glad we are starting to come out of it.”
She said WBG offered support to members by hosting a session featuring advice from an accountant, financial broker and lawyer to update members on funding and services available during COVID.
Ms Mitchell said businesses were staring to focus on Christmas trade and there was a real vibe in the street as businesses, restaurants and cafes embraced COVID-normal trading.
“Businesses are upbeat and hoping people will shop local. We want to encourage people to come into the town to shop,” she said.
A twilight tree market with Warragul Rotary Club this Friday night will be the first priority for the business group.
Ms Mitchell said they wanted to bring families into town with extended hours shopping, buy a Christmas tree and enjoy the festive spirit.
The executive will meet in the new year to set strategies and promotions for 2021.
Ms Mitchell said the annual Snowfest would be a major feature on the 2021 calendar.
“It might have to be different if there are still restrictions on large events but we hope it will be on the agenda,” she said.
