New students at Darnum Primary
Students at Darnum Primary School were eager to return to school after remote learning due to COVID-19 restrictions.
One of the priorities the school had upon students’ return was to provide some of the opportunities that students missed out on whilst learning from home.
Things like celebrating Book Week; holding our annual Writers’ Café; having our grade sixes run their mini-biz; as well as welcoming our new preps for 2021 are the things that students remember fondly when they are older, and the school wanted to make sure that these memories were still formed.
Last week, the school was able welcome our new prep students for 2021. This is an important part of the transitioning into school from kindergarten.
The students were able to attend in small groups and meet their teacher with some fun activities throughout the session.
The students reported that the school playground was the highlight. Some parents reported that students had gone home that afternoon and said they were ready to go back the next day.
To ensure that students still had opportunities to celebrate their learning, the school held its annual Writers’ Café. The event involves students presenting folios of writing pieces to their peers in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Students shared in morning tea before making their way around each other’s classes to share their writing master pieces. Unfortunately, other family members were unable to attend but the school hopes the event will be held next year under its normal structure.
School principal Jai Law said it has been a hard year for every school community in Victoria this year, and was proud of all the students and families, as well as staff, for working together throughout the biggest interruption to schooling ever encountered.
