Longwarry’s first win slips away

Longwarry’s division one side saw its first win slip away as they hosted league leaders Newborough on Saturday.

After leading comfortabl­y at the halfway mark, Longwarry was unable to continue its momentum as Newborough got up for a 14shot win.

Longwarry’s division six side continued its hot form, defeating Boolarra/Yinnar by 67 shots.

Division one: Longwarry 2/81 lost to Newborough 18/95.

Glenn Pask, Mark Serong, Kenneth Towt and Peter Lieshout (skip) lost to Allan Grubb’s team 17/28.

Longwarry got out of the blocks well, winning the first three ends. Newborough pegged them back to level at 13-all going into the main break. Newborough came out and played more consistent bowls in the second half to win by 11 shots.

Ken White, Matt Eccles, Ian Peterson and Adam Proctor (skip) lost to Neil Houston’s team 19/26.

This rink also started well, with the skip putting down some big bowls to lead 14/10 on end 14. Unfortunat­ely, Longwarry was only able to win three of the last 11 ends, to go down by seven shots.

Ellio Meggetto, Grant Pask, Jason Lieshout and Russell White (skip) lost to Paul Sherman’s team 17/24.

In a close tussle, Newborough led 13/9 at tea. Longwarry came out and won the next five ends to lead by four shots by end 19. The Newborough team then won the last six ends with consistent bowls to win by seven shots.

Brian Hennessy, Hank Metselaar, Barry White and Slim Eastwell (skip) defeated Nosha Michael’s team 28/17.

This newly formed rink got off to a flyer, winning 10 of the first 12 ends and leading 15/4. They continued playing good team bowls throughout the remainder of the day to win by 11 shots.

Division six: Longwarry (2) 10/90 defeated Boolarra/Yinnar 0/23.

Graeme Hanks, Brian Mason, Vicki Hanks and Simon “Big Show” Counsel (skip) defeated Janet Napier’s team 41/14.

With scores level at five-all by end seven, Longwarry picked up big numbers for the rest of the day for a convincing 27-shot win.

Reg Dunn, Sharon Twite, Judy Eastwell and Gerard “Boss Hogg” Mitchell (skip) defeated Peter Canavan’s team 49/9.

Longwarry played great team bowls throughout the day, highlighte­d by a seven on end 21. They dominated the game to win by 40 shots.
