Awards announced on Australia Day

Baw Baw Shire’s Australia day awards will be announced at a special ceremony on Australia Day next Tuesday.

In recent years council has held an earlier ceremony and awards presentati­on to announce its annual awards but this year council will return to an Australia Day event.

Announceme­nt of the awards will coincide with a citizenshi­p ceremony to be held in Civic Park, Warragul at 10.30am.

Annual awards to be announced and presented include citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, community organisati­on of the year and Australia Day medallions.

Community members are invited to attend the citizenshi­p ceremony and awards presentati­on, including a free community barbecue.

A flag raising ceremony will be ked by Scouts and Girl Guides and the Warragul Municipal Band will perform.

Free barbecues, family events and cricket matches will dominate community events will be held around the shire on Australia Day. COVID safe practices will apply to all events and community members will be required to social distance at events and check-in at events.

Aberfeldy – Saturday, January 30, noon at Cullens Flat, free community barbecue lunch and flag raising celebratio­ns.

Cloverlea – noon, free community barbecue at a venue to be confirmed.

Drouin – 8am, Civic Park - free community barbecue, morning tea, music, entertainm­ent, kids activities and community group displays.

Erica – Sunday, January 24 at Erica Caravan Park, 10.30am – annual charity cricket match with sausage sizzle. All proceeds going to the CFA.

Hill End – 6pm, Hill End community centre – flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free barbecue and trivia quiz.

Jindivick – 6pm, Kydd-Parke Reserve – flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free family barbecue.

Labertouch­e – 4.30pm at Labertouch­e Community Centre – Family cricket match followed by a free barbecue.

Narracan – 7pm at Narracan Hall – free family barbecue.

Shady Creek – noon, Shady Creek Hall – free barbecue lunch and Aussie desserts with entertainm­ent, games, competitio­ns and activities.

Tanjil South – noon at Tanjil South Hall – flag raising ceremony and free family barbecue lunch followed by Aussie music, a quiz and prizes for best dressed Aussie.

Tetoora Rd – 4pm to 6pm at Tetoora Rd Community Centre – Flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by free icecream in the paddock area. Friendly games for children and adults including back yard cricket o the tennis court and soccer in the paddock. A history display in the hall.

Thorpdale – 10.30am at Pioneer Park – flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free family sausage sizzle.

Trafalgar – 8am at Trafalgar Public Hall – Trafalgar’s citizen of the year and young citizen of the year will be announced at the annual free community breakfast. No bookings needed.
