Cellfield Gippsland

-

Bellfield Speech Pathology has been the home to Cellfield Gippsland now for more than 12 years. Over this time they have been able to support more than 175 students to accelerate their reading progress. Cellfield is the original intervention that uses the combined knowledge of computer science and neuroscience to provide an intervention that accelerates reading efficiency by an average of 18 months over a 4 week period. It works to link listening, speaking and visual skills to work together more effectively and increase the two primary skills of word attack and working memory which are at the core of the difficulties associated with Dyslexia/specific learning difficulties.

There are also improvements observed in the areas of attention and concentration, but these can be much harder to measure.

Every year as the school year starts families and their children can become quite anxious as their struggle continues. Over the last twelve months with so much home based schooling occurring, the issues and challenges that these students experience have really come to light for some families. Often they are unsure about where to turn or how to seek specific assistance.

Comprehensive language and literacy assessments are generally the best place to start to identify the key areas of strength and challenge.

Once these skills and baselines have been established then a clear pathway for support or intervention can be created. Seeing the changes and improvements is the area that the staff at Bellfield and Cellfield Gippsland love to see. Changing lives through enhanced reading and language skills is their primary focus. Due to high levels of demand at present, there is a waiting list for assessment, but they are currently recruiting to secure additional staff to continue providing the Gippsland community with services for their 32nd year.
