Neerim in good position

Neerim District sit second on the division two ladder after a 17-shot win over Traralgon to open 2021.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Traralgon (2) 107/90.

Playing at home, Neerim had a comfortabl­e 20-shot lead after 40 ends. However, that lead was cut down to four after 52 ends. The margin was still just four after 80 ends before Neerim finished off the better to win by 17 shots.

Peter Throup (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Karren Sheers and Gerry Engelstad defeated Barry Furnance’s team 25/23.

Neerim jumped out to a five-shot lead after three ends only to drop a four on the fourth end. Scoring was tight and scores level at 10-all on the 10th end and again on the 15th and 17th ends. Traralgon kicked clear by five shots on the 22nd end but Neerim finished strongly. A four on the last end gave them a two-shot win.

Trevor Kuhnell (skip), Peter Brooks, Tony Thornton and Ray Throup lost to John Taylor’s team 21/23.

Neerim led 10/4 after eight ends before Traralgon started to whittle back the margin, winning six straight ends to take a six-shot lead. Neerim cut the lead to two but Traralgon responded and led by seven on the 21st end. Neerim won three in a row to trail by one with one end to go, but it was Traralgon who won the end and overall result.

Ray Watts (skip), Jim Fallon, John Rochford and Colin McKay defeated Graham Cross’ team 28/21.

Traralgon led 5/1 after four ends before Neerim went on a winning streak of seven ends, including a six, to lead 17/5. Traralgon returned, winning the next six ends to close within three shots after 17 ends. From there both teams won four ends, but Neerim scored the better to win by seven shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Angus McGillivra­y, Chris Hogan and Roger Till defeated David Currie’s team 33/23.

Neerim had a great start and led 10/1 after four ends. Traralgon then won six of the next seven ends to trail by just one shot. Neerim steadied and led by six on the 17th end only to drop two fours on consecutiv­e ends to trail by two. On the next end, Adams took out the Traralgon shot bowl to get a seven and hand Neerim a five-shot lead. Neerim won three of the last five ends, including a five, to win by 10 shots.

Division five: Neerim District (2) lost to Newborough (4) 33/83.

Neerim District had a dismal day at the wet and windswept Newborough grass green. The team will look to bounce back from a bad day after not handling the conditions.

Russell Meehan (skip), Greg Bond, Gerald Winter and Graeme Wingrove lost to Peter Wonnocott’s team 7/30.

Neerim were level at five-all after eight ends, but Newborough powered away to win by 23 shots.

Stephen Halligan, Thelma Schroeder Tom Goodwin and Des Pelly lost to Rod Dixon’s team 11/25.

Neerim trailed 2/15 after 12 ends but were competitiv­e thereafter to go down by 14 shots.

Jim Schroeder (skip), George Rymer, Wes Ellis and Neville Cousins lost to Ken Bechaz’s team 15/28.

It was another terrible start for Neerim, trailing by 20 shots after 13 ends. Neerim outperform­ed Newborough in the second half and managed to cut the margin back to 13 shots.
