Slow start to year for Longwarry

Longwarry’s division one side were soundly beaten in cold and drizzly conditions at Morwell on Saturday.

Longwarry only won one rink against Morwell Club in an overall 34-shot loss.

Division six had a much better result, defeating Churchill at Churchill by 25 shots.

Division one: Longwarry 2/82 lost to Morwell Club 18/116.

Hank Metselaar, Damien Cooper, Jason Lieshout and Slim Eastwell (skip) lost to John Millier’s team 28/24.

In a tight game all day with several lead changes, Longwarry led by one shot on end 23. However, they were unable to hold off the Morwell team who picked up five shots on the last two ends to win by four.

Brian Hennessey, Mark Serong, Grant Pask and Russell White (skip) defeated David Stevens’ team 29/16.

After a slow start, Longwarry picked up six shots on end five and never looked back. They increased the lead throughout the day to win by 13 shots in a great team effort.

Glenn Pask, John McCarthy, Matt Eccles and Adam Proctor (skip) lost to Rod Smith’s team 14/36.

Longwarry took some time to adapt to the slow green and trailed by 26 shots by end 17. They finally started playing better to win five of the last eight ends. However, the home team were too good on the day and won by 22 shots.

Ken White, Peter Lieshout, Ian Peterson and Barry White (skip) lost to Brett Harle’s team 36/15.

This Longwarry rink also took awhile to adjust to the conditions and were 11 shots down by end 13. They made some inroads and got within three shots of Morwell by end 18. However, the Morwell team finished strongly, picking up 20 shots in the last seven ends to win by 21 shots.

Division six: Longwarry (2) 10/57 defeated Churchill (2) 0/32.

Reg Dunn, Brian Mason, Graeme Hanks and Simon Counsel (skip) defeated Colin Smith’s team 22/18.

In a tight contest for most of the day, Churchill got the upper hand to lead by four shots at end 22. The young, fit Longwarry team picked up eight shots in the last three ends to win by four.

Sharon Twite, Ron Sutton, Judy Eastwell and Vicki Hanks (skip) defeated Peter Marks’ team 35/14.

After picking up a five on the first end, the new look Longwarry rink never looked back. They increased the lead throughout the day to win by 21 shots in a great team effort.
