Christmas carnival a rousing success

-

On December 28 and 29, Garfield Bowling Club held its annual Christmas Carnival tournaments.

The carnival was only half its usual length, as teams were hard to get with many being away over Christmas this year, not having been able to do so earlier due to COVID-19. Despite that, a good time was had by all who did attend, helped by perfect bowling weather on the two days.

On the first day, the competitors played 3 bowl pairs. A late withdrawal caused a stir, but Franciska Axford from Warragul Bowling Club came to the rescue with a mad dash to fill the spot, for which the club is truly grateful. The winners of the day came from far-flung Brunswick Bowling Club members Darren Moore and Jack Stammers. Runners-up were regular stalwart visitors to Garfield, Mick Knight and Keith Lewis from Cardinia Waters.

Day two saw the people playing 3 bowl triples, again in perfect sunshine. A mishap at lunch time meant that one of the players had to pull out, giving super-sub Tom Cleary a chance to strut his stuff. Winners on the day were the team of Steve Lord, Paul Caneva and Paul McConachy from Warburton, with a local Garfield team of Shane Oliver, Tom Cleary and Helene Newton coming runnersup.

Tournament Director, Damian Brick, thanked all the Garfield members who had put in to make the day’s work, as well as the teams who attended and made them successful, with the hope of returning to the normal four day festival in the future.
