Bunyip show bite in win over Crows

- By Nathan Weatherhead Division 5:

Longwarry 68 def by Bunyip 3/71

In a game that was wrapped up inside 40 overs, Bunyip showed their bite at home as they defeated Longwarry by seven wickets.

Batting first, Longwarry lost an early wicket as Adam Barton struck, but Lachlan Fernandez (18) and Jet Pickering (13) looked to build the innings into a competitive total.

It wasn’t to be however as Ben Sharpe (3/16) looked exactly that, sharp, picking up wickets at regular intervals to see Longwarry fall to 8/47, the Bunyip bowlers smelling an early tea break as Adam Barton (2/27) and Davis McConnell (2/9) supported Sharpe well.

After some late runs to Ryan Atherton (12) the Crows were all out for 68 and Bunyip set to work, but it wasn’t without a scare.

Bunyip found themselves 2/22, but Angus Emery (23*) Adam Barton (14) and Jeremiah Whibley 19* were able to counter the Longwarry bowlers, mopping up the runs in just 13 overs. Liam Bow, Jack Tenace-Greenall and Jet Pickering the wicket takers for Longwarry.

Iona 6/170 def Hallora 6/169

In what was another thriller, Iona escaped with the narrowest of victories over Hallora at home in what was a Michael Scully masterclass.

Batting first, the Iona innings looked shaky early with the score at 2/15, but that brought Scully to the crease. His 72* peppering the Hallora bowlers around the ground in a telling display of batting. His partnership of 66 with Travis Kitchin (34*) helped see their side to 6/170 from their 40 overs. Gary Donoghue toiled all afternoon to finish with 3/28 from his eight overs, while Jake Dean was the other multiple wicket taker with 2/30.

Heading out to bat, Hallora looked lively early as Daniel Simons (32) scored freely before falling to Jarryd Bain. At 3/47, Hallora needed a partnership and Leigh Cook and Brian McDonald took up the task. The pair combined for a 101-run stand with Cook (48) and McDonald (58*) steering Hallora towards victory before Troy Hemming picked up the crucial wicket of Cook late in the innings with 23 runs still to get.

This slowed the Hallora attack and try as they might, Brian McDonald and Darren Humphrey weren’t able to get the Iona bowlers away, falling one run short after their 40 overs in another brilliant game. Travis Kitchen followed up his fantastic knock with the bat to be the pick of the bowlers, snaring 2/20 off his eight overs. Garfield-Tynong 174 def by Warragul 6/177 Warragul claimed the six points over GarfieldTynong at Logan Park on Saturday, chasing down the total set by the Titans in 40 overs.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, the Titans were able to start well, with Stuart Horsburgh (38) and Ray Evans (60) anchoring the innings, before a late collapse of 6/36 saw them stumble. Only captain Darren Vandeberge (20) was able to stick around as he watched his teammates fall to the bowling of Amrinder (4/24) and Vaneet Singh (3/20) who caused the most havoc with the old ball to restrict their opponents to 174.

Starring with the ball, Vaneet Singh was full of confidence with the bat during Warragul’s innings, blasting 75 at number four to guide his Gulls home alongside captain Paul Singh (27), with Parmjit Singh (19*) and Luke Smith (22) the other top scorers for the side. The six bowlers used by the Titans’ all snared a wicket a piece and battled hard, but ultimately, it was Warragul’s day at home.
