Titans prevail in thrilling fashion

- By Nathan Weatherhead Division 4:

Garfield-Tynong 128 def Warragul 127

As rain threatened all day, Garfield Tynong have prevailed by just one run in a thrilling Division 4 contest in wintry conditions.

After being sent in to bat as clouds hovered, the Titan’s openers were up to the task, with Amjinder Mann (29) and Andrew Myers (12) put on 48 for the first wicket, before Charlie Wans broke the partnership and saw the side begin to falter, with only a few batsmen able to get starts without going on with it, eventually being bundled out for 128.

Warragul’s chase also was riddled with a bevy of starts with only three batsmen getting into double figures.

After falling to 7/69 and staring down the barrel of a big loss, up stepped Jason Pisa and Charlie Wans.

The pair took the score to 7/121 and within eight of victory, before another twist as Pisa (27) departed as did Clerks, leaving Warragul with just one wicket in hand.

Ultimately, it wasn’t enough as the stunning innings from Charlie Wans came to an end in agonising fashion when he was run out for 33 on the game tying run. His side falling by the barest of margins in a cracking cricket match. Longwarry 7/152 def Drouin 9/151 Longwarry leant on opener Evan Wright as they chased down Drouin’s target to claim victory in 39 overs at the Longwarry Recreation Reserve.

Batting first, Drouin’s Bailey Osseweyer (39) and Adin Short (30) paced the Hawks’ innings, with some late hitting from Jimmy Atwal (26) an important addition to the scorecard. However regular wickets to Luke Merrett (3/35) saw them restricted to 9/151 after their allotted 40 overs.

The Crows’ innings began in flying fashion, as Wright quickly raced along supported well by opening partner Daniel Pullen before he fell for 10.

Wright (43) fell soon after as Adin Short (4/22) began to cause some havoc with the ball. It was then up to captain Jesse La Frantz to steady the ship, a timely 33 almost seeing his side home before he fell late in the day with just four needed for victory.

Grace Lewis (7*) and Christiaan Dauphin (2*) were able to hold their nerve and hit the winning runs for the Crows with just one over to spare.

Jindivick drew Western Park in a washout.
