Gallery finally unveils its collection of art

-

When Anne Lorraine unveiled a new art gallery in Warragul, she never envisioned being forced to shut for a vast majority of the year ahead.

In fact, the gallery’s first exhibition “Artist, Architect and Dunera Boy” celebrating the life and artwork of Anne’s father Hans Lorraine remained on the walls of WAS Gallery for just shy of 12 months.

The gallery officially opened in February last year before being forced to shut in March and “pretty well shutdown ever since”.

As restrictions eased, Anne quietly re-opened the gallery in November and is ready to start afresh in 2021.

A new exhibition “Trans Nature” will start this process, featuring the photographs and prints of Irene Proebsting of Tyers, Miriam Potts of Traralgon and Anne Lorraine of Warragul.

“Trans Nature” was unveiled last week and features all-female Gippsland artists who worked together at various stages.

Anne said the idea to open an art gallery in Warragul came after she finished work at Monash Gippsland after 15 years.

Coming from an artistic family – father Hans an architect and painter, mum Judy a potter and architect, sister Sue a jeweller and Anne herself a graphic designer – Anne wanted a gallery to exhibit treasured family works as well as other people’s art pursuits.

She uncovered the 1930s building in Latrobe St and set about restoring the old solid brick house with great atmosphere into a gallery.

Anne also is planning to develop a sculpture garden over time at the site.

Visitors to WAS Gallery at 37 Latrobe St, Warragul are welcome Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
