Garfield

Weather wise, this week had it all with the hottest day in twelve months on Monday, gale force easterly winds on Thursday and a deluge of rain amounting to a month’s worth on Friday.

The only good part about this is our water storage is at an all-time summer high. Two golfers in particular go under the spotlight this week with their consistency of play head and shoulders above everyone else.

David Manning, usually a Sunday player, playing off his low mark of 10 has had a tremendous two months with a 39-point victory at the end of November followed by down the line scores of 35, 32, 37, 34, 37, 37 and finally another score of 37 points last Monday.

Ray James, playing off his mark of just six has also had a time of it by scoring rounds of 34, 35, 37, 36, 69 stroke play, 35, 35 and finally 37 points on New Year’s Day. Well done to both gents.

Saturday was the playing of the Fallon/Barnes Trophy with a field of the eight pairs playing a mixed Canadian event. The handicap winners were John and Jill Gay with a score of 67 whilst the best scratch score was achieved by Grant and Amanda McLure with a round of 79.

A round of 70 or better was needed to win a ball down the line. For everyone else it was a game of single stableford with a field of 101 taking part. The scoring was of a high standard with a better than handicap score of 37 required to finish in the money. Dan Kelly won the A Grade event on a count back from Curtis Duffy with a score of 41 points.

Charlie Barnes broke a long run of outs to win the B Grade event with the same score to defeat Peter Johnson by the one point. Ian Scott also scored 41 points to win the C Grade event by just the one point from Tony Quinn. It was a good day on the birdie front with a total of 17 scored on the par threes with doubles achieved by Shane and Trevor Male and Geoff Turner.

The wild winds of Thursday were attended by a field of 59 with the overall scoring well down on the average results. Frank Hyett got the nod for the A Grade event with a score of 37 points to defeat Richard Perry by just the one point. Neville Howe won the B Grade event with a less than impressive total of 35 points to defeat Jackson Bennett whom finished second on a count back over Clinton Smith with a total of 33 points. Doug Dorrat got home first for the C Grade decision with a total of 37 points to defeat George Fatouros by just the one point.

A round of 30 points or better, the lowest in a long time was enough to get a ball down the line. Next Saturday is the February Monthly Medal.
