Neerim falls to Newborough

WGBD Saturday Division 2

Neerim District Bowling Club suffered the same fate as their Division five side the previous week when they played away against Newborough (2) and were soundly beaten 70 to 121. All four rinks went down with the Neerim bowlers not coping with the heavy grass green.

Peter Throup (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Karren Sheers and Gerry Engelstad lost to Jeff Wetzel’s team 14/33. Neerim were hanging on early but dropping a six on the 9th end had them trailing by 11.

A succession of ends to Newborough including a five had their lead out to 20 on the 17th end. Neerim got their own five on the 19th end, but Newborough went on to win by 19 shots.

Trevor Kuhnell (skip), Peter Brooks, Tony Thornton and Rob Cook lost to Robbert Cook’s team18/ 30. Neerim got on the board with a five on the 5th end to trail by one and drew level at 13 all on the 12th end after picking up two ends of three.

It was lean pickings from there however as Neerim could only manage five singles as Newborough picked up multiples to run out 12 shot winners.

Ray Watts (skip), Ross Pollard, Jim Fallon and Colin McKay lost to Gary Ingley’s team 22/ 25. This was a close game throughout with neither team able to get a break of more than 4.

Neerim had a 3 shot lead on the 13th end with the score 14/11. Newborough drew level on the 19th end and then kicked ahead with a 4. Neerim closed to within one on the 23rd end but singles on the last 2 ends saw them go down by 3 shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Angus McGillivra­y, Chris Hogan and Graeme Wingrove lost to Graham Cock’s team 16/33.

Neerim scored a one on the first end but that was followed by a drought of seven ends with heavy losses. Neerim then performed much better restrictin­g Newborough typically to singles but scoring multiples themselves and cut six shots from the deficit to go down by 17 shots.

WGBD Saturday Division 5

Neerim District Bowling Club (2) played at home and bounced back from the previous weeks heavy loss on grass to record a 56 shot win over Morwell Club (2) with the scores 107/ 51.

Greg Bond (skip), Russell Meehan, Cookie Halligan and Wes Ellis defeated Barry Flanigan’s team 29/15. Neerim jumped out to an early lead but by the 10th end Morwell Club had drawn level at seven all.

Neerim then won four ends straight including two fours to lead by 12. Neerim extended the lead to 18 shots on the 21st end before Morwell club trimmed that back at the finish to 14 shots.

Stephen Halligan (skip), Tom Goodwin, John Rochford and Ray Throup defeated Geoff Unwin’s team 37/18 Neerim started well and powered away to a 10-shot lead on the 7th end and extended that to 15 on the 12th end. Morwell Club picked up seven shots on the next two ends but Neerim responded with 10 shots on the next three ends including a five. Neerim continued to extend their lead and won by 23 shots.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Roger Till, George Rymer and Neville Cousins defeated Beryl Noblett’s team 37/ 18. The game was in the balance on the 10th end with Neerim leading by one. Neerim then won 8 of the next 9 ends just missing out on an 8 on the 19th end to lead 30/ 10. Morwell Club won 4 of the last 6 ends but Neerim had the 19-shot win.

WGBD Tuesday Division 2

Neerim District Bowling Club played away against Newborough (2) and lost 47 to 60.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Di Tame, Kay Cousins and Gerry Engelstad lost to Adrienne Birchal’s team 16 to 23. Neerim started well and led nine to three on the 7th end but then dropped eight shots over the next three ends to trail by two. Newborough continued to consolidat­e and extended their lead to 11 on the 19th end. Neerim managed to win the last 2 ends to cut the margin to seven.

Cookie Halligan (skip), Thelma Schroeder, Gerald Winter and Jim Schroeder lost to Carmel Goss’ team 15 to 23. Neerim also started well and soon led by four shots and were still up 10 to six on the 9th end. Newborough started to close the gap and a four on the 11th end had them in front. Newborough came home strongly picking up a further nine shots to Neerim’s four to win by eight shots.

Karren Sheers (skip), Marion Willis, Stephen Halligan and John Rochford defeated Helen Grubb’s team 16 to 14.

This Neerim rink mirrored the other two and got off to a poor start and trailed nine nil after five ends. Neerim then had a winning run of eight ends to hit the lead by one on the 13th end and by five shots on the 16th end. Newborough then won the next four to trail by just one with one end to go but Neerim got the shot for a two shot win.
