Garfield

A fine week until a huge dump of rain on Friday evening followed up by a showery day on Sunday.

This week we take it up a notch with our 2020 club champion Shane Male having the best summer results seen for a long time. Since November, Male has scored down the line results of 38, 36, 33, 35, 41 38, 34 and winning an A Grade scratch with 74 and to top that off last Saturday Male had a 67 off the stick resulting in a round of 40 points.

Hopefully Shane can get down to playing off scratch which would be a magnificent achievement. Saturday was Monthly Medal day with a field of 111 facing the starter.

Bob McKenzie, a 22 marker, was victorious with a net round of 64 winning by just one shot from Barrie Cousin and a further two shots back to Ken Pettiford in third place.

A final score of net 71 was needed to get a ball down the line. The aforementioned Male won the A Grade scratch event whilst Darren Rae won B Grade with a score of 84 whilst McKenzie scored a double by also winning the C Grade scratch event. In a difficult day for birdies just the total of 11 were scored on the par threes.

A good size field of 64 turned out on Thursday with the overall scoring being better than handicap standard with a round of 36 points required to finish in the money. Kevin Whitmore from Witz End golf got the A Grade decision on a count back from Trevor Franklin with a final score of 39 points playing off his mark of 12.

Peter King won the B Grade event with a score of 40 points whilst Mick Howsin got the nod for C Grade with a total of 38 points. Darren Mouser and the aforementioned Franklin both had the two birdies for their round.

Friday saw the official opening of the new second and third holes, held as part of the Leanne Bambridge Memorial Day. With forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms failing to eventuate, more than 100 players took part in the three-person Ambrose event. Clear win ners were the team of Ryan Hammond, Ryan Radford and Matt Guy, who combined to shoot an eighteen under 54, net 53 and one sixth.

Sunday 7th February Pennant Results: Results Scratch 1 at Morwell: Drouin A defeated Yallourn 4/3. Drouin B lost to Warragul 2.5/4.5.

Handicap 1: At Trafalgar: Drouin lost to Traralgon 5/2. Handicap 2: At Morwell: Drouin defeated Traralgon 4/3.

Next Wednesday is a par event for men. Next Saturday is a stroke round, the second of Club Championships.

Achieving every golfer’s dream this week was 80 year old Laurie Pyle, who scored a hole in one on the par 3 14th at Drouin on Wednesday.

After playing for 40 years, he said he was stunned to see the ball in the hole and never thought it would happen, joking that he should probably retire.
