Bowlers win day at Jindi
Jindivick 134 v Garfield-Tynong 0/20 Garfield-Tynong are in the box seat against Jindivick after a dominant, grinding display on Saturday.
Losing the toss and fielding, Tanay Katarey (3-45) and Gerald Shields (2-18) did the damage with the new ball for the Titans, as no Jindivick batsmen could provide much resistance against the swing bowling barrage.
The home side grinded most of the day out, reaching 8-89 before a late counter-attacking knock from James Maguire (30) pushed the Jumping Jack score to 134.
APK Rangajith proved to be the pick of the bowlers, with a suffocating spell of 4-13, before Matt Dodman (10*) and JKR Umayanga (9*) got their side through to stumps unscathed at 0-20.
Catani 6/259 v Iona
A magnificent, maiden WDCA century from Daniel Vela has led Catani to another dominant day over Iona.
Winning the toss and being sent in under cloudy skies, Catani fell to 3-49 early, however, Daniel Vela and brother James (32) rebuilt the innings, against stern opposition from Wade Haysom (2-48).
Another short collapse left Catani 6-160, but Vela, who finished up on a rapid 107 not out despite the slow outfield and Riley McDonald (59*) generated a monster 99-run stand in quick time, pushing the total to 6-259, and seemingly handing Catani another victory next week.
Western Park 9/177 v Longwarry
Longwarry may rue their decision to send Western Park into bat in a do-or-die clash at the Warriors home ground on the weekend.
Sporting a spin-bowling barrage, the Crows dominated most of the day against their potential rivals for fourth place, reducing Western Park to 6-119 after tea with Yashan Samarasinghe (5-31) doing the damage with a fantastic spell.
Dale Fawcett (41) and Sam Cheeseman (37) repelled the opposition for as long as possible, but the real damage came late in the day as Luke Garner (29) and Matt Garner (18*) added a quickfire, crucial late partnership to push the match in Western Park’s favour, as they made 9-177 to set up a great finish next week.
Drouin 136 v Hallora
A strange day of cricket saw two former Division 1 cricketers star for their respective clubs, leaving their game in the home side’s hands.
Batting first, Drouin struggled to score for the majority of the day against a strong Hallora side on a relatively fast outfield, as Nick Harper (28) provided a base against the likes of Jai Newcombe (1-17) in the first session of play. With the score at 3-46 off 44 overs, the Hawks needed a spark and got it through star man Sam Wyatt (47).
The self-proclaimed “Club Champion shoein” at Drouin hit the ball cleanly to all parts of the ground, narrowly falling short of a halfcentury as Dave Macdermid took over for the Hallora. Macdermid- primarily a batsmen in the top division, proved why medium-pace part-timers are the way of the future, providing a stunning spell of bowling late to completely decimate Drouin’s tail- the 2017 A Grade player of the final took WDCA career best figures of 6-28, as he and Hallora dismissed their opponents for 136 to take the upper hand.
