No finals for WDJFL

-

The Warragul and District Junior Football League have pulled the pin on the 2021 season because restrictions do not allow for community sport competitions to take place.

Minor Premiership cups and medals will be awarded to players in the Buln Buln U10s and U12s, and Longwarry U14s.

Three teams in the WDJFL are in the Cardinia shire, including Caldermeade, Garfield, and Bunyip, which means metro restrictions apply.

With many of these junior teams in the top four, a finals series would be affected because these teams would remain in the metro lockdown.

WDJFL President Paul Osborne thanked all the club officials, coaches, parents, umpires, and sponsors who put their time and effort into the season.

“Most importantly thanks to all the children who participated this year in the 33 teams that competed in our great competition,” Osborne said.

Interleague games will be rescheduled for April and May next year for U12, U13, and U14 players.

A best and fairest vote count for this season will take place online on Saturday.

There is still potential for a finals series to take place with EDFL junior teams, as youngsters can now train with their teams after restrictions eased last week.

The new restrictions allow for community sport teams to hold trainings with the minimum number required to train. Spectators are prohibited from attending except for one parent to supervise their child.

“Whilst the regional Victoria news is encouraging there is no guarantee a return to play date will follow next week. Nonetheless the EDFL board still hold hope the junior preliminary finals (scheduled for 18th September) and grand finals will proceed,” a statement from the EDFL said.

The League has earlier stated a two week finals series could take place on the 24th of September, with a Grand Final on October 2nd played at the latest.
