McKellar joins Hawks
It’s been a successful year for the Gippsland Storm Netball Club, with three junior netballers making the Victorian Netball League.
Drouin product Lucy McKellar along with teammates Eliza Molino and Keeley Burgmann have made the VNL Hawks 19 & under squad.
But it’s not the first time Lucy has been a Hawk. At seven-yearsold, Lucy played her first match in the Drouin and District Netball Association with her older sister, who helped to encourage her love for the game.
And it was at nine-years-old when she started at the Drouin Hawks Netball Club in the Gippsland League, where her talents took hold and developed.
Now an A-Grade netballer for Drouin, Lucy was guided by coaches Ali MacArthur and Stacie Gardiner who assisted her journey through Gippsland Storm.
Gippsland Storm is a club for the elite development of junior netballers, and Simon O’Shanassy has been head coach and a key influence on Lucy’s development ever since she started in the U13s in 2017.
Lucy took on the role of Captain at the Storm in the U17s, and has always met the high expectations of the elite development team.
Through being a part of the Next Gen program at Hawks in 2021, in which she was able to train with the U19s team and play in several games, Lucy has been able to experience the high standard of VNL competition and has enjoyed the challenge.
“Lucy enjoyed great success at Storm but more importantly, it has been her off court development with leadership and communication skills, that she has developed, during her stay at Storm, which will be a great value for her in the future” Dad Brett McKellar said.
The Storm are preparing to welcome the next generation of VNL players at their tryouts this month.
Tryouts will be held on back-toback Sunday’s, the 14th and the 21st of November at the Officer Community Hub.
