Arts flourish at Drouin Secondary College

-

Drouin Secondary College (DSC) students will take to the stage this week for their first production in more than two years.

'Buffy vs Dracula: Goes Wrong', an original comedy, opened with a matinee for local primary schools last Tuesday, which was followed by performances Friday and Saturday night. The final two performances will be held this Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm.

The production is about a theatre company putting on a play. However, everyone is a bit incompetent and everything keeps going wrong. The set is not right, the costumes do not work, the band has the wrong cues and the techies keep messing up. The show features an upbeat soundtrack and follows a hilarious cast as they try to hold it together for the performance of a lifetime.

DSC teacher Brie Brooker said students have been very involved in the production in several areas.

"Students lead several aspects of the performance, including the lighting and sound boards, the band, backstage crew, and make-up artists," she said.

The band is made up of students and is led by teacher Peter Russell.

Ms Brooker also described the challenges that the cast and crew have overcome during the rehearsal period.

"Honestly, we've had things go wrong that weren't part of the plan - but that's COVID, isn't it?" she said.

"To minimise the risk, we've double-cast some roles, such as Buffy, who for two shows will be played by Tahlia Marriott and the other two by Britt Gardner."

"Dracula is played by James Butler," she added.

All arts students at DSC are enjoying getting back into the swing of things and the school recently held an Arts Showcase performance in front of families, students, and staff.

The showcase featured performances by student rock bands, and drama and dance students. Audience members were also presented with a visual arts display, including airbrushing, clay sculpture and line drawing works, and films by media studies students.

Tickets for the final shows can be purchased for $10 per person at https://www.trybooking. com/BZPOH or cash at the door.
