The upcoming event, the “Over the Top” (OTT) Theatre Sports Heat 2 is a friendly competition between local theatre companies from around Gippsland, hosted by Steve Wiegerink of ‘The Magic If’.

“The Magic If” is a local arts enterprise that seeks to investigate all possible creative possibilities, across art genres and within a diverse and evolving community.

Each “Over the Top” theatre sports heat includes a wide variety of short, time-limited theatre games that challenge actors in the team to improvise their acting to enable an entertaining spectacle for the audience.

Teams get a small amount of time to plan their team roles, their performance goals, and how they will use the small stage to fulfil the game challenges.

The games are created by the professional MC and gamemaker, Tori Adams (previously of Warragul Theatre Company), who also employs two independent judges from outside the Gippsland area to assess each teams’ skills. Games are divided into two acts, with live music between and after the two acts.

Visual artists are encouraged to attend to capture the atmosphere of the games with arts-making media, and audiences enjoy looking at the visual artworks between acts.

The evening concludes with live music, following the calculation of judging scores, and awarding Heat medals to the winning team.

Heat 1, held in March, was a competition between Warragul Theatre Company, Ghostlight Theatre Company, Latrobe Theatre Company, and Lyric Theatre Company, where Lyric took home the medallions.

The final, a competition between the Heat winners, will be held in November.

Friday’s Heat 2 includes musical entertainment by Luke M, an international performer, with skills in guitar, harmonica, and singing, to continue the multi-arts atmosphere.

Jak’s Music, a live music venue in Warragul, has recently installed new heating to ensure a warm night out for actors, artists, and audience members; and has a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks for purchase.
