Bank Place Dental can help achieve great oral health

-

Did you know that there’s a delicate balance being maintained in our mouth?

Every time we eat and drink the bacteria in our mouth (good and bad ones) consume the sugar in our diet and produce acid.

This acid has the potential to weaken and dissolve our teeth…if we let it!

Our saliva contains many minerals and proteins that are great at reversing the effects of this acid, so all we must do is give our saliva the chance to do its job. What does this mean?

• Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water to dilute the acid attacks.

• Avoid snacking. Snacking increases the frequency of acid attacks and doesn’t give our teeth a rest, nor does it give our saliva a chance to do its job to reverse the effects of those acid attacks.

Sugar-free snacks/drinks are often high in acid, so even though they may appear to be healthier alternatives, they are not great for our teeth.

• Healthy snacks. If you are snacking then keep to dairy and nuts as these are the opposite of acid, and also contain the same mineral our teeth are made of, giving our saliva a helping hand.

• Wait before brushing.

If you have something to eat or drink, wait 30 minutes before brushing, as the enamel is at its softest during this time.

We don’t want to brush away the softened enamel! Give your saliva the chance to strengthen the enamel again first.

It can be hard to know what’s going on in your mouth, so see your dentist regularly so that we can help you get on top of things sooner rather than later. We are passionate about helping you achieve great oral health!
