The next general meeting of the Warragul and District Historical Society will be on Monday, August 29 at 7.30pm.

The meeting will be held in the Old Shire Hall at 72 Queen St and visitors are welcome.

Anne Bullen will be the guest speaker giving information about the forthcoming Centenary Celebration of the Tetoora Road Hall and some of the interesting discoveries while researching the history of the area.

At the previous meeting Baw Baw Shire mayor Michael Leaney, a resident of Walhalla, spoke of his involvement of the history of the town. He said it was a unique heritage town with great emphasis by all on retaining that image.

Walhalla is the most remote town in the shire with access on a sealed road and in the 1970s a greater appreciation of Australian history and heritage became apparent so conservation and restoration of the old buildings became very important.

More planning is being developed such as planting lists of vegetation of those early days to remain true to the time period of about 1915 as their heritage goal. Cr Leaney also conducted the election of office bearers for the 2022-23 year.

Office bearers elected were: president Josephine Dickson, secretary Helen Thomas, vice-president Robert Kippen, treasurer Malcolm Dickson. Committee members are Eddy Valena, Colin Silcock, Bill Cropley and Ras Lawson.

New members are always welcome. The meeting concluded with supper for all present.

The museum at the Old Shire Hall is open on Thursdays from 10am to 2pm and on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month from 2pm to 4pm.
