Budgerigar Club

-

At the last meeting of the Baw Baw Budgerigar Club, secretary Darren Macfarlane gave a presentation on the breeding of two varieties – fallows and black-eyes.

Fallows are recessive and easily identified by their red eyes, pink legs and feet and have less pigmentation in their feathers creating a pastel-like colouring with wing feathers having tinges of brown.

Black-eyes are usually yellow birds and possess a white iris in the eye along with greyish-pink legs and feet. Like the fallow, blackeyes have recessive genes. Darren had examples for members to observe closely to enable them to identify these birds in the aviary.

Darren is a champion breeder of fallows, winning at state championships.

A reminder to members and anyone who may wish to observe, the next meeting on Monday, September 5 will be selection for the UBC championship being held at Carwatha College Noble Park on Sunday, September 11. UBC stands for unbroken cap. These are babies who have not gone through their first moult and still have the bars across their forehead and are 12 to 18 weeks old.

Meetings are held on a monthly basis in the old tennis club rooms in Burke Stt opposite the aquatic centre. Meetings normally begin at 7pm and last about two hours, usually with a guest speaker. If you would like to know more about breeding, showing or would just like to join the club you can make contact via the club’s website - https://bawbawbudgerigarsociety.weebly. com or find us via our Facebook page.

The next monthly meeting will be on Monday, September 5.
