Members enjoy gardens and more for 50 years

-

The Poowong Garden Club is celebrating 50 years with a flower and photo show at the Poowong Public Hall on September 10 and 11.

Community members are invited to attend the weekend, which will include a wine and cheese social evening and an official birthday cake cutting on Saturday night, beginning at 7.30pm.

The flower and photo show will have 28 floral categories and six sections in the photo competition.

Members of the public are encouraged to enter exhibits in the flower and photo sections and there are 10 categories for primary age school children to take part in.

Sunday will be less formal with the doors opening at 10.30am for viewing of the show. Refreshments and cake will be on offer during the day.

Poowong Consolidated School students have been getting involved, making bright and colourful felt fabric flowers that will be displayed in pots lining the foyer of the hall for the special occasion.

The Poowong Garden Club was formed following a public meeting of gardeners interested in forming a club on May 19, 1972 and has continued to be strong and active in their small community with a current membership of 32 passionate gardeners.

The first president, secretary and treasurer were, respectively, the late Nene Green, Iris White and Eileen Archer.

The club held its first flower show about 12 months after it was formed and the shows continued for many years. The flower shows in Poowong concluded in the early 1980s due to financial pressure and time burdens.

Fifteen years ago, the club launched its book titled “Gardens and More”. A book documenting the history of the club, members gardening stories, hints and tips on gardening and information and details about Poowong’s parks and monuments.

Community members, including past and present-day garden club members, can attend the weekend. For further information, or to request a show schedule, please contact Linda Harvey on 0439979831 or email secretarypoowonggardeclub@gmail.com
