Mixed results for Strikers
Gippsland Strikers had mixed results, with a disappointing loss and fantastic win on Friday night.
The under 16 girls had a late game at Camberwell. With the rain falling, things didn’t go well with a 0-4 loss.
Camberwell are the only team to have beaten the Strikers this season, and once again they matched up well.
The final scoreline made the loss look like disaster, which it was. But it could have been so much closer.
Many Striker shots on goal were stopped on the line or hit the post and deflected out. Some big calls went the other way, Simply, it was just one of those nights.
The loss results in the Strikers locking in second place for finals, with first now out of reach.
The under 18s played Doncaster at home on Friday night and had a fantastic 6-0 win.
With five exhausted boys returning from the SSV mixed finals in Melbourne, the girls and Leith had to carry the team. They did this with gusto.
Claire Cake, Lauren Austen and Kitty Bergmann were impenetrable in defence, Monique Zurrer and Hayley Tepper were creating attacking play in the midfield and Thea Pozzebon played the wing position with precision.
Leith Metcalf played a defensive position for the first time on a Friday night, and did a great job.
Goal scorers were Thea Pozzebon, Charlie Coster, Elliot Stephens and Jordan Oellermann with one each and Hayley Tepper with two.
Friday night is the final round, with a double header at home. Anyone interested in watching some high-class hockey is invited down to Bellbird Park in Drouin.
The Strikers under 16 girls will play Southern United at 7pm, and the Strikers under 18 mixed team will play KBH Brumbies at 8.10pm.
