“HUNGER STRIKE” FOR WARRAGUL

-

The hungry and starving of the world’s underdeveloped and developing nations were suffering unnecessarily from an age-old curse which today owed its existence to society’s lack of social priorities.

The chairman of the Warragul Shire Freedom From Hunger Committee, Mr F. Mountford, said this morning that the “money, equipment and knowhow” was available to “banish the age-old curse from the face of the earth forever.” However, he said, millions were dying each week from malnutrition and hunger. Mr Mountford made the comments when announcing that a public meeting would be convened in Warragul to organise a “hunger strike” in Warragul Shire on Sunday, September 24.

The local committee will organise teams of “hunger-fighters” to call on homes. A

ppealing for support, Mr Mountford pointed out that children under five years of age were the main victims of the poverty-malnutrition problem.”

They constitute only 20 percent of the world’s population, but 60 percent of all deaths. Action must be taken now to end this monstrous injustice - and we can all help,” Mr Mountford said.

He said that Australians who chose to “turn their backs” on the plight of the world’s hungry and needy people did so at their own peril.”

A hungry man surrounded by plenty is a dangerous man, and a hungry nation in a world of plenty is a real threat to world peace, security and safety.

“I am confident that the people of Warragul Shire will continue to give generous support to the Freedom From Hunger Campaign’s selfhelp projects.

“The fact that the Campaign will not participate in self-defeating hand-outs is now understood by the people of Warragul - and this augurs well for the success of the appeal,” Mr Mountford said.
