Warragul Garden Club
With the start of spring, members are busy in their gardens sowing vegetables and flowers for spring and summer, pruning some fruit trees, weeding and fertilising garden beds and lawns, and managing snails, slugs and other pests.
It’s the busiest time of the year in the garden, but we look forward to enjoying the flowers that make our gardens a place of beauty and respite. We continually add vegetables during the season so that we have an ongoing supply.
Gardening is very good for our mental health. It can transform people’s lives, and to quote Oliver Sacks, “In many cases, gardens and nature are more powerful than any medication.” People garden for many reasons, but the result is the same: we produce an environment for everyone to enjoy.
Members enjoyed the show of flowers, particularly bulbs, at the August meeting, as well as an informative talk by Steve Rowe from Rowe’s Nursery.
Many members visited Leongatha for the Daffodil festival which was a vibrant yellow display around the town as well as a daffodil and floral show at the Memorial Hall.
In October we are going to the Dandenongs for a visit to a Peony nursery, and to the wellknown native plant Kuranga nursery. Some members are travelling to South Australia for a great trip to see some famous sites and gardens.
Members are busy propagating plants for the club’s plant sale on Monday, September 26 at the Senior Citizens Centre in Barkly St, Warragul (note change of venue). This will be open to the public.
There will be a short meeting at 9:30am, open to the public, with the sale starting immediately afterwards. Join members for morning tea and admire the flowers and vegetables on the flower bench (competition). Cash only for plant purchases.
Flower arrangement of the month will be “Tribute to the Queen.” It will be interesting to see what our creative people produce. You may also see magnolias, lilacs, and rhododendrons on display.
