Famous people topic for junior speakers

-

Drouin Lions Club recently hosted its club final of the Lions junior public speaking competition.

Siahli Muir from Columba Catholic Primary School in Bunyip won the final.

The competition was run in their schools first and judged with the winners coming through to a Drouin Lions meeting.

Siahli will now go through to the semi final in Tooradin in early October. The semi-final winner will go to the Lions District 201V3 Convention held in Lakes Entrance.

Lions Australia promotes the program which has been running successfully since 2007 in the 201V6 District. Each year, more and more schools, clubs and districts are becoming involved.

Students enjoy the program and reap the benefits for years to come. Teachers are enjoying the program and making it part of their class curriculum as it incorporates story writing, research, and speaking in front of the class.

Lions members have seen quiet, shy students, too timid to speak then stand up and deliver a speech that has simply blown judges away and they have gone on to win the competition.

Drouin Lions president Erika Wassenberg said all students had to give a talk on “Introduce a famous person who lived in the 19th Century.”

The range of famous people included Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Beethoven, Ned Kelly and more.

Erika said all students were commended on the amount of work they did researching and speaking on their person of choice. “All students were amazing, and their schools and families should be very proud of them. Many thanks to our judges Vin Bibby, John Franklin and Lion Richard Carlson. “

Other students at club level this year included Greta Kinder, Taylah Wassenberg, Evie Piner, Riley Davidson, Makaylah Monckton, and Josie Spain from St Ita’s Primary School, Drouin and Columba Catholic Primary Bunyip.
