Primary school Picassos

-

Family and friends of students flocked to Longwarry Primary School at the end of term for an art show and special person's day.

Students were encouraged to invite a special person in their life to go to school and look at their artwork, do some activities and enjoy a coffee and a sausage sizzle.

Acting principal Anne Welsh said the event was an opportunity for the community to come into the school and see the artwork students have produced over the last couple of years.

"We've been shut because of COVID. "This is an opportunity to invite all the special people in the kids' lives to come into the school and see what we've been doing, and what learning has been going on."

Ms Welsh said feedback from visitors on the day was "great", as many had not had the opportunity to go to school because of the pandemic.

Rows of children's artwork were hung up on display, and other pieces - like pottery - were laid out on tables for viewing.

Art teacher Lis Height said the focus of the artwork exhibition was Pablo Picasso and other famous artists that students had been studying in class.

"We took all grades 3/4s and 5/6s to the National Galleries.

"The whole school has each done a Picasso self-portrait and the rest are reflective of famous artists like Van Gogh and Suzzane."

Ms Height said it was "amazing" to have all the student's art displayed and to have the community be able to come in and see what they've been doing.

This is also the first year students have been able to do ceramics after the school purchased a kiln last year.

Students Diesel and Lacey Hamilton invited their parents Eleisha and Jarryd, and their grandmother Kate Provan to the special event. Ms Provan said her children had been creating lots of art.

"They both made a little statue of our dog, and bowls and plates," she said

"It's just wonderful to see it all, wonderful to be here and be a part of it," Ms Provan added.
