Mixed results for Drouin croquet

Drouin's associatio­n croquet team of Jenny Leesing and Nannette Fry hosted the Phillip Island team last Thursday.

Competitio­n in the first singles was intense, with Phillip Island's number one player Pat Wilsmore winning 19/18 after receiving one bisque from Jenny Leesing.

A good effort by Nannette Fry who won her singles 13/8, after giving away two bisques to Pauline Leditschke.

In the doubles the Drouin pair gave away 1.5 bisques, the match going Phillip Island's way with a 25/10 win. Drouin has the bye next round.

Final score: Drouin one game 41 hoops was defeated by Phillip Island two games 52 hoops.

Drouin Gold at their home venue had a convincing win in the golf croquet over the Wonthaggi 2 team last Tuesday with the Wonthaggi players having difficulty adjusting to the heaviness of the Drouin lawns.

Gold had a strong result in the singles games winning seven out of eight.

Level singles results: K. Marriott def. Neil Warburton 7/3 and Virginia Wheeler 7/3, H. Bullen def. Virginia Wheeler 7/5 and Neil Warburton 7/3. Cris Musgrove had a tussle winning both his games 7/6 against Sue Cartwright and Margaret Brooks. Janette Fisher def. M. Brooks 7/6 but lost 1/7 to Sue Cartwright.

Hcp. doubles results: gaining five extra shots between them Warburton/Wheeler (Wonthaggi) had revenge in the first doubles def. Marriott/Bullen 7/3, Musgrove/Fisher won 7/5 against Cartwright/Brooks.

The Drouin combinatio­n of Marriott/Musgrove went to the deciding 13th hoop to win 7/6 against Warburton/Cartwright, Bullen/ Fisher def. Wheeler/Brooks 7/4, Marriott/ Fisher won 7/5 against Wheeler/Cartwright and Bullen/Musgrove for Drouin won 7/5 in the last doubles of the match against Warburton/Brooks.

Cris Musgrove reduced his handicap by one to 11.

Final result: Drouin 12 games 88 hoops defeated Wonthaggi 2, 2 games 71 hoops.

Gold travels to Leongatha today.

Drouin Green were thrilled in winning their first match for the season in round five of the Gippsland croquet pennant last Tuesday against Phillip Island, who were the hosts.

Ray Biffin was the star performer winning all of his five games for the match, and ending +18 nett hoops on the day, a fine effort in his first pennant season.

Level singles results: Drouin's Bob Quayle lost 3/7 to Claire Earl and def. Judy Nicoll 7/4, Nannette Fry def. Judy Nicoll 7/2 but lost to Claire Earl 4/7, Ray Biffin def. Margaret Frith 7/5 and Lillian Wagstaff 7/1, Michael Scanlon def. Lillian Wagstaff 7/6 but lost 2/7 to Margaret Frith.

Handicap doubles: Quayle/Fry lost 6/7 to Earl/Nicoll, Quayle/Biffin def. Earl/Frith 7/6, Fry/Biffin def. Earl/Wagstaff 7/1, Biffin/Scanlon def. Frith/Wagstaff 7/4, Fry/Scanlon lost 6/7 to Nicoll/Wagstaff, Quayle/Scanlon def. Nicoll/Frith 7/1.

Final result: Drouin Green nine games 84 hoops defeated Phillip Island five games 65 hoops.

Green plays Wonthaggi 1 at home today in round six.

Congratula­tions to Drouin pair Kelvin Marriott and Bob Quayle for winning Div. 1 at the Lakes Entrance GC Hcp tournament held September 17 and 18.
