Mosaic Group exhibition

-

The Baw Baw Arts Alliance’s Mosaic Group held the official opening of its exhibition ‘Same Same but Different’ at the Yarragon Station Gallery last week.

The exhibition features a variety of pieces created by about 20 members of the Mosaic Group, which has been recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Mosaics.

In each piece, artists used different types of tiles, reused crockery, and other ceramic pieces to fashion a variety of detailed mosaics.

The group members said the name for the exhibition came about because they started with a theme, back got carried away and were unable to stick with it completely. The end result is a beautiful culmination of a collection of 30cm by 30cm square mosaic pieces and other exhibits, some of which are 3D.

The mosaic group started when members worked with renowned artist Maery Gabriel to create the Compass Rose in Burke St Park. They began as the Women Who Mean Business Group and eventually morphed into what became the Baw Baw Arts Alliance.

“We got a start, and now we are a self-funded group,” group member Ingrid Thomas explained.

Members of the original Rose Compass project have since continued their mosaic education and now tutor others in the craft.

The vast majority of members come from the Gippsland Region to hone their skills, however, some come from as far as Pakenham.

In 2021, group members completed Pat the Dog, a 3D mosaic piece that now sits outside the Yarragon Station Gallery.

Each year the group present a mosaic exhibition to showcase their work, and said they would not be where they are today without the late Maery Gabriel, who left many of her works and tessera to the Alliance.

“Same Same but Different” is open at the Yarragon Station Gallery from Wednesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 4pm, until the end of October.
