Victorian first for CLAAS

- By Andrew Paloczi, South Gippsland Sentinel-Times

VICTORIA’S first fully suspended halftrack tractor is destined for GippsFresh Korumburra, with the stunning CLAAS machine set for action after being sold by CLAAS Harvest Centre Leongatha.

The Axion 960 Terra Trac features tracks in place of rear wheels.

It is driven by an 8.7 litre Fiat Power Train engine generating 445 horsepower.

Terra Trac is patented by CLAAS, with the system enabling the machine to operate smoothly and efficiently on challenging terrain, while minimising its impact on the soil.

“The track is always in contact with the ground, even if the surface is undulating,” product manager for High Horsepower CLAAS Tractors James Harrison said.

Unlike other vehicles with tank-like tracks, the Axion 960 Terra Trac is steered by conventional front wheels, which is why soil disturbance is minimised.

In Korumburra, the versatile tractor will be used for tasks such as linkage-mounted mulching, plowing, and hoeing and is well-equipped to pull large implements.

With the purchasers of the tractor having multiple properties, its ability to comfortably negotiate sealed roads is important.

“The tracks have been designed to be self-cleaning and self-cooling,” James said.

The tractor can reach an impressive 45 kilometres per hour on the road, with trials demonstrating it can travel long distances on a sealed surface without any issues.

Its efficient continuously variable transmission provides significant diesel savings.

The high-tech tractor assures a smooth ride.

“The cab is sprung on four corners, being fully suspended,” James said.

There is also front axle suspension, suspended front and rear linkages, and suspended seating.

“It’s like riding on carpet,” James said.

CLAAS Harvest Centre Leongatha’s service manager and his staff enjoyed learning more about the Axion 960 Terra Trac at a Thursday training session and look forward to sharing their knowledge and passion.
