Six decades of badminton

The Warragul Badminton Club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a function recently.

More than 120 people were in attendance at the club, where a variety of club memorabilia dating all the way back to 1962 was available to browse. Club president Hayden Fowler gave a speech at the event, giving a brief outline of the history of the club from its early beginnings until now, outlining the many improvements the club has achieved over its 60-year history.

The club's early history was one of humble beginnings, as the stadium in which the club calls home was originally build as a sheep pavilion. From there, the tin shed and concrete floors gave way to the well-maintained badminton stadium of today, featuring a wooden sprung floor, a lighting upgrade and functional clubrooms. Mr Fowler also outlined the club's many fundraising efforts to achieve these upgrades, as well as the growth of the body of players the club has in juniors and seniors.

Mr Fowler made a tribute to club legend Harold Spargo, with a court being named in his honour, before Harold's son Craig unveiled the official plaque for the court.

Following the day's activities, a more casual event was then held at Oaks at Logan Park. Dale Spargo and Hazel Spargo were in attendance this time to hear a more casual description of Harold's input into the Warragul Badminton Club and his enthusiasm to promote the sport.

The day was an excellent day for many past players to catch up and reminisce on the many activities and fun that the Warragul Badminton Club has provided over the many years.
