Goannas win despite rain

-

It was disappointing Yarra Valley Cricket Club could not get an over 70s team together to play the Gippsland Goannas at Maffra on Tuesday.

The next over 70s game will be an away game against West Gippsland next Sunday.

However, the Gippsland Goannas over 60s cricket team welcomed the Australian Cricket Society team from Melbourne to the Sale oval for round two of the VCV on Sunday.

ACS won the toss and decided to bat with the ground being damp from morning rain, but the pitch in excellent condition. ACS got off to a bright start and had eased their way to 0/55 in the 15th over when a rain delay of around 40 minutes resulted in the match then changing to 35 overs a side.

After the delay, the Goannas bowlers stuck to their task. Although only taking one wicket for the innings, they were able to restrict the ACS to 123 runs.

Barry Nunn was the wicket taker with 1/5 from his five overs. Barry’s bowling continues to improve.

For ACS, Ian B Gibson (21 n/o), Flynn (30 n/o) and Stockdale (29 n/o) were the main contributors.

The Goannas then had a turn to bat with the weather improving.

Ray Smith and Rob Taylor again got them off to a solid start. Smith contributed 30 n/o and Taylor 16 n/o.

There were also good contributions from Rino Metlikovec (24n/o) and Ian A Gibson (27n/o). The Goannas lost two wickets hauling in their target in the 33rd over.

Many thanks to the Sale Cricket Club for providing an excellent wicket as well as Gary Rose, Bob Duljas and Jim Armstrong for playing with ACS who were struggling for numbers.

The Goannas over 50 team has an away game scheduled for this Sunday at Coburg, while the over 60 rep teams have trial games next Sunday. Round three will be an away game against Mornington Peninsula on October 30.

Training for all current and prospective Goannas will commence outdoors at Glengarry this Wednesday from 4:30pm. All are welcome.
