Midweek

Division three: Garfield defeated Morwell (3) 69/57

The division three midweek side visited Morwell to play under their roof, where the weather was irrelevant. The match-up saw close game on two rinks, but a runaway on the third.

The stand out rink was that of Margaret Hyam, Richard Ross, Lexi Taylor and skip Helene Newton. They bolted out of the boxes to be 12 shots up after five ends. The game was even after that, but the damage was done. Garfield won 26/13.

The team of Cheryl Breteler, Luke Monckton, Damian Brick and skip Gwen Fabris also started well. But, in their case, the home team made a concerted effort to catch up. With the score 19/20 with two ends to go, a five killed Garfield’s chances. Despite a valiant last try with three shots on the last end, they went down 22/25.

Maureen Lamport’s rink, consisting of Jan Johnson, Malcolm Newham and Bob Lamport, were on a see-saw with their opponents, with the lead changing eight times during the game. After 17 ends, Garfield led 17/16 and kept the lead to win by two shots, 21/19.

Next week, they are at home playing Trafalgar.

Saturday

Division three: Garfield defeated Boolarra 86/76

Garfield played host to Boolarra with none of the four games close. The overall score went Garfield’s way by 10 shots.

The team of Wes Goodman, Gary Payne, Gordon Moxey and skip Alan White were down by 10 shots after nine ends. They made a great comeback to be only down by two with two ends left. Unfortunately, their opponents scored five on each of those ends, for a final score of 15/27.

Tom Cleary’s team, consisting of Frank Prins, Len Preece and Joe Lenders, had a day out. They led by 9/0 after five ends, and kept that up all day. They finished with an overwhelming win, 38/14.

Graeme Burton, Maureen Lamport, Bob Lamport and skip Richard Ross were down early. They weren’t overwhelmed but their opponents pulled away slowly in a 10/22 loss.

With a 24-shot win balancing two 12-shot losses, the result of the day was in the hands of Alan Wilson, Les Pumphrey, Gary Helmore and skip Stephen Whyte. Their game was the same as the Ross team, but in reverse. They slowly but steadily drew away from their opponents to win 23/13.

Division five: Garfield (2) lost to Trafalgar (3) 46/73

Garfield went to Trafalgar to start off the season. Again, the result was decided by two close rinks, and one runaway. However, this time, the runaway went against Garfield.

The rink led by skip Gwen Fabris, with Judy Pocklington, Steve Hyam and Lexi Tylor, started slowly and were quickly down by six shots. But they got themselves going and the game was tight between the teams. Ultimately, Garfield went down by just two shots, 20/22.

Keith Sainsbery, Margaret Hyam, Helene Newton and skip Damian Brick also started slowly. They also caught up, tied 17-all with three ends to go.

After winning one end each, Trafalgar was one shot up going into the last. Garfield’s lead Keith and second Margaret each put a bowl within a foot of the kitty to give their team the go-ahead position. Third Helene set up two protective bowls, resulting in the win 21/20.

Barrie Smith’s team, consisting of Lois King, Shirley Corcoran and Luke Monckton, drew the short straw to play against Trafalgar’s best and were never in it all day. They lost 5/31.

Next week they play at home against Moe.
